2007 Southern Presses Meeting

event registration | call for exhibitors | hotel reservations | letter from the director | preliminary program

Welcome to the information portal for the 2007 meeting of the Southern University Presses. We look forward to seeing you in beautiful, downtown Jacksonville, Florida, Feb. 16-18, 2007. This will be a great opportunity for new members to meet more experienced members, to network, hobnob, or just find out what makes our jobs easier. The opening banquet on Friday night will begin with a sunset cruise on the Jacksonville Princess on the St. Johns River, complete with food and drinks. Please extend thanks to Maple Vail, Pinnacle press and IBT for their generosity.

The program theme is “alternatives.” The focus is on different ways to provide our knowledge base and perform our jobs better. We will be hearing from newly hired members, those who have worked their way through the ranks, “old timers” who have many experiences to share and vendors with ideas of how we can do our jobs differently.

Registration includes all meals except Saturday night dinner. Two keynotes speakers, S.V. Date of the Palm Beach Post, and Diane Roberts of FSU and NPR will speak about writing politics in the Sunshine State. They will be concentrating on how writers transition from newspaper writing to non-fiction books.

Registration forms and hotel registration are now available. Event registration is $135 ($185 after January 5th), Saturday only registration $75 and hotel rooms at the Crowne Plaza Jacksonville Riverfront are $95/night plus tax. Self parking is complimentary for all attendees with validated parking ticket.

The hotel is conveniently located only 20 minutes/miles away from the Jacksonville International Airport. Transportation to and from the airport is available via the Express Shuttle, (904) 353-8880, for $20.00 each way, or taxi fare runs approximately $30.00 each way. For downtown transportation, the Skyway Express (a monorail) is available around town and across the river for 35 cents per person each way; you can also take the Water Taxi across the river for $3.00 per person one way or $5.00 round trip.

Other nearby hotels on the same side of the river include the Hampton Inn - 904-396-7770, Wyndham - 904-396-5100, and Extended Stay - 904-396-1777. Hotels just across the river include the Hyatt - 904-588-1234 and the Omni - 904-355-6664.

The exhibit room will feature many familiar faces and some new ones. We will be hosting coffee breaks in the exhibit hall so you will have plenty of time to check out the services and wares offered. If you are interested in becoming an exhibitor please go to call for exhibitors.

Jacksonville has plenty to do, including restaurants, nightclubs, golf, and historic sites. Average temperatures for February are in the 70’s during the day and low 50’s at night. There are numerous stores, restaurants, and evening spots just across the river at Jacksonville Landing.

Visit the Jacksonville Convention and Visitors Bureau to learn more about the Greater Jacksonville Area. If you are interested in a golf game, contact Meredith for ideas and fees to the more popular places. Did someone say “Sawgrass?"
