Check the Credits: Is the material you wish to use credited to another source? You can find credit lines in the footnotes, endnotes, acknowledgments section, captions, and sometimes on the copyright page (p. iv). If the material is credited to another source, you must direct your request to that other party instead of the University Press of Florida.

Is It “Fair Use” or “Public Domain?”: Using very short excerpts from a text may fall under the definition of “fair use,” and as such, do not require permission. There are exceptions to this rule and the length of the original text governs the length of the usable material. Please check with the Permissions Department if you have any questions concerning fair use. “Public domain” refers to publications whose copyright has expired and are therefore available to reprint without permission. Once your request has been received, the copyright will be researched to determine if the University Press of Florida is indeed the owner, and notification will be sent, along with any fee information. While requests are answered as soon as possible, please allow two weeks for processing.
