History
Established in 1945, the University Press of Florida ranks
among the most productive publishing houses in the Association
of American University Presses (AAUP) . With more than 865
titles currently in print, 90 titles in production and over 190 additional titles under contract, the Press has been an important
element in enhancing the scholarly reputation and worldwide
visibility of the State University System. The Press is a member
of the Association of American University Presses, the Society
for Scholarly Publishing, and the Publishers' Association of the
South.
What We Publish
The Press publishes
scholarly books in the arts, humanities, and natural and social
sciences and participates in the mission of the State University System through a publishing
program that seeks to maintain the professional excellence of
American university presses in general and to present the finest
national and international scholarship in those academic areas in
which we publish. In recognition of the State University System's
educational mission and public role, the Press also publishes
books of interest and significance for our region and state.
More specifically, the Press publishes in
the areas of Latin American and Caribbean studies, literary
criticism, fine arts, Middle Eastern
studies, American religion, southern history and culture, archaeology and
anthropology, natural history, and Floridiana.
As a non-profit publishing house, the Press
operates as both a Type 1 Research Center in the State University
System and as a publishing business. In its latter role the Press
recognizes the need to operate the business and financial
dimensions of its publishing activities in a responsible manner
so as to continue to generate increased revenues that help
sustain our program and support its development. To this end, we
define our program to include vigorous and imaginative promotion,
sales, and distribution, both domestically and internationally,
in order to achieve maximum dissemination of our books.
The Press begins its second half-century
with new leadership and a continuing
commitment to excellence in scholarly and regional interest
books.
